Princess Kate told her close friends she would be going by a new name before she got engaged to Prince William, claims a royal expert.
The future queen is said to have wanted to ditch the informal ‘Kate’ for a more regal moniker and sent a ‘humorous email’ to her pals informing them of the change.
Robert Jobson asserted in a recent biography of the royal mother of three that the name change took place in 2008 amidst widespread rumors of the couple’s engagement.
Jobson claims that Catherine told those close to her that from now on she would only be known as “Catherine” instead of “Kate”. It is still unclear if this was a result of her own preferences or if it was a part of a bigger plan to get ready for her official public role as Prince William’s future bride. She appears to have genuinely wanted to use her entire name, nevertheless.
The renaming gave rise to more rumors that Prince William was going to pop the question. After all, in 2010, William did pop the question. Their fairytale wedding took place in April 2011 in front of millions of people worldwide.
Kate’s official title after being married was Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. After Queen Elizabeth II passed away in September 2022, she was bestowed with the new title of Princess of Wales. This title had once belonged to Princess Diana.
Prince Harry disclosed in his biography Spare that King Charles had proposed altering Catherine’s name spelling. Harry claims that Charles suggested changing “Catherine” to “Katherine” in order to prevent confusion with the current royal cyphers. Since both Camilla’s and the King’s cyphers have a “C,” Charles thought it would be confusing to add another. He pondered the fate of this recommendation.
Prince Harry recalled looking to see what Prince William’s reaction was to the name change.
He added: ‘I turned to Willy, gave him a look that said, “You listening to this?” His face was blank.’
Kate ended up using her preferred spelling of the name for her official title, although many still refer to her as Princess Kate informally.
