Prince William has taken offence to his brother refusing to call Princess Kate by her preferred name.
Prince William is “furious” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle because the pair “deliberately” refer to his wife as Kate instead of Catherine.
The Princess of Wales reportedly asked her friends to refer to her as Catherine instead of Kate just before she married into the Royal Family, because it is the name she prefers.
A friend of the couple claims that the Prince of Wales, however, has apparently taken offense to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex publicly calling his wife “Kate,” even while they were wishing her a speedy recovery following her cancer diagnosis.
“William takes offense at people calling Catherine ‘Kate,’ because she has asked to be known as Catherine,” a friend of William and Catherine said to The Daily Beast.
It’s a very basic request to be respected. If William began referring to Meghan as “Meghan Markle” in public, I’m sure she wouldn’t like it.
It’s a completely insignificant matter, of course, but those of us who know William are aware that it’s among the things that irritate him. While he was coping with his wife’s cancer, it seemed completely unnecessary and intentional to irritate him.
It was “bloody rude,” according to a second friend of the couple, for Harry and Meghan to refer to the Princess of Wales as “Kate.”
The friend remarked, “Nobody’s saying it’s to blame for all the trouble, but calling someone by a name they don’t like on purpose is just bloody rude.”
“Call her Catherine if Harry and Meghan were serious about moving past their differences.”
William and Catherine’s decision to ignore Harry and Meghan’s condolences following the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis may have been influenced by their apparent unwillingness to address her by her preferred name, which they described as “an entirely unnecessary and deliberate irritation.”
The name request sent by Kate came in 2008 – two years before William ultimately popped the question.
Prince Harry also previously wrote in his bombshell memoir Spare that the now-King “asked his daughter-in-law to change the spelling of her first name”.
The former working royal claimed that his father wanted his sister-in-law to change her name spelling from a C to a K.
The Duke of Sussex wrote that he spoke to his brother at the time about their father’s suggestion: “I turned to Willy, gave him a look that said: ‘You listening to this?’ His face was blank.”
Kensington Palace has been approached for comment.
